# Dharma — source and rights register

Audit date: **29 October 2026**. This register describes the material included in the current MN 63 proof of concept. It identifies particular editions; it is not permission to copy every work available from the same website or author. The authoritative project terms are in [LICENSE.md](LICENSE.md), with a reader-facing explanation at [licenses.html](licenses.html).

The website software is MIT-licensed. Original teaching and editorial contributions are offered under CC BY-NC 4.0 **only to the extent that their contributors hold the relevant rights**. Imported works retain their own terms. Ancient public-domain text and any unprotectable AI output do not acquire a new restriction through inclusion in this collection.

## 1. Pāli root text

| Field | Record |
| --- | --- |
| Work | Majjhima Nikāya 63; Mahāsaṅgīti source title **Cūḷamālukyasutta**. The reader also uses the familiar title **Cūḷamāluṅkyovāda Sutta**. |
| Edition/provider | Mahāsaṅgīti Pāli root edition, obtained through SuttaCentral / bilara-data. |
| Reader source | <https://suttacentral.net/mn63/pli/ms> |
| Exact data source | <https://raw.githubusercontent.com/suttacentral/bilara-data/published/root/pli/ms/sutta/mn/mn63_root-pli-ms.json> |
| Retrieved | 29 October 2026. |
| Rights | The ancient Pāli root text is **public domain**. SuttaCentral-created contributions are CC0 unless otherwise specified; third-party translations and other legacy works hosted by SuttaCentral may have different terms. |
| Provider policy | <https://suttacentral.net/licensing> |
| Repository notice | <https://github.com/suttacentral/bilara-data/blob/published/LICENSE.md>; preserved copy: [licenses/SUTTACENTRAL-BILARA.md](licenses/SUTTACENTRAL-BILARA.md). |
| CC0 | <https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/>; [legal code copy](licenses/CC0-1.0.txt). |

The project retains the Roman Pāli in each passage's `piRoman` field and mechanically transliterates it into Devanagari in `pi`. Both `ṁ` and `ṃ` become anusvāra `ं`; `ḷ` becomes `ळ`. Roman punctuation is retained. Display passages, section headings, selection groups and annotations are editorial additions, rather than part of the ancient text.

The dataset contains **28 passages in six sections**, covering all **179 unique discourse-body source IDs, `mn63:1.1` through `mn63:10.7`, exactly once**. Title metadata `mn63:0.1–0.2` is represented in document metadata. The recitation colophon `mn63:10.8` is treated as metadata rather than spoken discourse. **87 sentence or semantic-line alignment groups** connect the four displayed languages. These are reading aids, not a claim of verified word-for-word equivalence.

No additional project restriction is placed on the public-domain Pāli. Provider credit is retained for provenance and scholarly courtesy. SuttaCentral's community preferences concerning generative-AI datasets are distinct from the legal status of an ancient text; this curated edition does not represent a grant of permission to copy unrelated modern works or an endorsement of AI translations by SuttaCentral.

## 2. English translation — Thanissaro Bhikkhu / Access to Insight

| Field | Record |
| --- | --- |
| Exact title | **Cula-Malunkyovada Sutta: The Shorter Instructions to Malunkya** (MN 63). |
| Translator | **Thanissaro Bhikkhu**, translated from the Pali. The reader may render the name with diacritics as Ṭhānissaro Bhikkhu. |
| Copyright | **© 1998 Thanissaro Bhikkhu.** |
| Source edition | **Access to Insight (BCBS Edition), revised 30 November 2013.** |
| Source URL | <https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.063.than.html> |
| Source provenance | The ATI page identifies its text as transcribed from a file provided by the translator. |
| Retrieved | 29 October 2026. |
| License | **Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0)**, as linked on the specified ATI page. |
| License URL | <https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/>; [legal code copy](licenses/CC-BY-NC-4.0.txt). |
| Local edition ID | `en-thanissaro-1998` in [content/mn63.json](content/mn63.json). |

The complete discourse wording of this ATI edition is retained. HTML formatting is removed, whitespace is normalized, and passage divisions and alignment groups are added. Published repetitions and ellipses are preserved; the project has not invented expanded English repetitions. ATI links to a later edition elsewhere. **This project reproduces the specified ATI edition, not that later edition**, whose terms must be checked separately before importing it.

Reuse of this English text requires compliance with CC BY-NC 4.0: appropriate credit, the supplied copyright and attribution notices, a license link, an indication of changes, noncommercial use, and preservation of supplied disclaimer notices. Do not imply endorsement or impose additional restrictions on the licensed freedoms. The full legal code governs.

Suggested credit for an unchanged project English edition:

> “Cula-Malunkyovada Sutta: The Shorter Instructions to Malunkya” (MN 63), translated from the Pali by Thanissaro Bhikkhu, © 1998 Thanissaro Bhikkhu. Changes: HTML formatting removed, whitespace normalized, passage divisions and alignment groups added; English wording preserved. No endorsement is claimed.

If you change or adapt the translation, describe your actual changes and do not attribute your revised wording to the translator as though it were his unchanged edition. The MIT software license does not authorize commercial reuse of this English translation.

## 3. Nepali, Hindi and original editorial material

| Material | Current edition and status | Rights record |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Nepali translation | `ne-ai-v1`, created 29 October 2026; `status: ai-draft`, `reviewedBy: null`. | AI-generated draft using the Pāli with consultation of the ATI English edition. It has not been reviewed or approved by the project editor or a language expert. |
| Hindi translation | `hi-ai-v1`, created 29 October 2026; `status: ai-draft`, `reviewedBy: null`. | Same source basis and unreviewed status as the Nepali draft. |
| Original introductions, glossary explanations, section headings, alignment annotations and captions | Dharma project contributions, 2026; subsequent revisions must carry their own version/review record. | CC BY-NC 4.0 only for copyright or similar rights actually held by Sameer Regmi and Dharma contributors. Imported text retains its own terms. |

The project offers the relevant rights it holds in these contributions under [CC BY-NC 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/). No exclusive copyright is asserted over ancient teachings, facts, public-domain material, or AI-generated expression to the extent that it is not legally protectable. A license cannot grant rights that do not exist or that belong to somebody else.

Where a Nepali/Hindi contribution is an adaptation of the ATI English translation, retain that source's attribution and comply with its noncommercial license as well. Consulting a public-domain Pāli text does not remove rights in a modern translation used alongside it.

Suggested project credit:

> Dharma contributors, Dharma sutta reading project, MN 63, Nepali `ne-ai-v1` / Hindi `hi-ai-v1`, 29 October 2026. Unvalidated AI draft, prepared using the Pāli with consultation of Thanissaro Bhikkhu's ATI English edition (© 1998; Access to Insight, revised 30 November 2013; CC BY-NC 4.0). Original project contributions are CC BY-NC 4.0 to the extent rights are held. Source and full notices: https://dharma.media/licenses.html. Changes: [describe your changes]. No endorsement is claimed.

The domain URL above is the intended publication address; its inclusion is not a statement that the website is already deployed. Preserve the actual source URL and notices when hosting a copy elsewhere.

Draft and uncertainty notices must remain visible in the reader, printouts and PDFs. The editorial queue in [content/README.md](content/README.md) records textual differences, the apparent `mn63:3.25` finite/infinite source inconsistency, uncertain arrow-material/species terms, and terminology requiring review. Future editor/expert review must identify the reviewer, edition, date and scope. Local browser edits remain unvalidated until deliberately incorporated into a reviewed edition.

## 4. AI-generated illustrations

The three raster illustrations were created with the built-in OpenAI `image_gen` tool on **29 October 2026**, for this project. No external stock photographs, reference artworks, third-party character designs or logos were supplied for these images. The retained generation/edit prompts and detailed provenance are in [assets/images/mn63/README.md](assets/images/mn63/README.md). The scene metadata, multilingual captions, alt text and passage references are in [content/mn63-illustrations.json](content/mn63-illustrations.json).

All masters are opaque **1536 × 1024 PNGs**. WebP delivery versions and 360-pixel-wide WebP thumbnails were encoded with Sharp from these masters; this changes delivery encoding and thumbnail dimensions, not the scene content. The evening conversation includes lighting and traditional Buddha-depiction corrections; the arrow scene includes a raised-hand anatomy correction. The latter two edits were made on 30 October 2026 with the built-in image-generation tool and are documented in the prompt record.

| Original master | Delivery / preview copies | Passage basis and sole display placement |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [01-seclusion.png](assets/images/mn63/01-seclusion.png) | [01-seclusion.webp](assets/images/mn63/01-seclusion.webp), [01-seclusion-thumb.webp](assets/images/mn63/01-seclusion-thumb.webp) | Māluṅkyaputta alone in contemplation, source `mn63:1.1–2.14`; section `setting`, passage `mn63-002`. |
| [02-conversation.png](assets/images/mn63/02-conversation.png) | [02-conversation.webp](assets/images/mn63/02-conversation.webp), [02-conversation-thumb.webp](assets/images/mn63/02-conversation-thumb.webp) | Māluṅkyaputta's evening conversation with the Buddha, source `mn63:3.1` and later conversation passages; section `questions`, passage `mn63-005`. |
| [03-arrow-simile.png](assets/images/mn63/03-arrow-simile.png) | [03-arrow-simile.webp](assets/images/mn63/03-arrow-simile.webp), [03-arrow-simile-thumb.webp](assets/images/mn63/03-arrow-simile-thumb.webp) | The hypothetical poisoned-arrow simile, source `mn63:5.6–5.35`; section `arrow`, passage `mn63-012`. |

These are **interpretive AI illustrations, not historical records, archaeological reconstructions or verified likenesses**. People's appearance, pose, clothing details, architecture, trees, lighting and the precise wound location contain artistic inferences. The arrow scene depicts a hypothetical example told by the Buddha, not an event in his life, and does not depict the Buddha. Keep these distinctions with captions and exports.

To the extent the project contributors hold copyright or similar rights in the images and original captions, those rights are offered under **CC BY-NC 4.0**. No exclusive rights are asserted in unprotectable AI output or public-domain subject matter, and no guarantee of exclusivity is made. Attribution should identify “Dharma project, interpretive AI illustration, 2026,” retain the scene/passage context and license link, and identify any changes. Do not credit a source translator or institution as the illustrator or imply their approval.

## 5. Fonts

The five redistributed font files belong to two families, **Noto Serif Devanagari** and **Noto Serif**, under **SIL Open Font License 1.1 (OFL)**. They are not project-owned and are not covered by the project's MIT license. The two families supply Devanagari and Latin text respectively in the PDF pipeline and print styles.

| File | Use | Exact copyright evidence and upstream source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [noto-serif-devanagari.ttf](assets/fonts/noto-serif-devanagari.ttf) | Locally hosted variable web font. | **Copyright 2022 The Noto Project Authors (https://github.com/notofonts/devanagari)**. Upstream: <https://github.com/google/fonts/tree/main/ofl/notoserifdevanagari>. Original notice and full OFL: [assets/fonts/OFL.txt](assets/fonts/OFL.txt). |
| [noto-serif-devanagari-regular.ttf](assets/fonts/noto-serif-devanagari-regular.ttf) | Static Regular font used by the PDF pipeline. | Binary copyright: **Copyright 2019 Google Inc. All Rights Reserved.** Upstream: <https://github.com/notofonts/noto-fonts/tree/main/hinted/ttf/NotoSerifDevanagari>. |
| [noto-serif-devanagari-medium.ttf](assets/fonts/noto-serif-devanagari-medium.ttf) | Static Medium font used by the PDF pipeline. | Same **2019 Google Inc.** binary copyright and static upstream directory as Regular. |
| [noto-serif-regular.ttf](assets/fonts/noto-serif-regular.ttf) | Static Noto Serif Regular, for Latin text in PDFs and print styles. | Binary copyright: **Copyright 2015-2021 Google LLC. All Rights Reserved.** Unmodified upstream file: <https://github.com/notofonts/noto-fonts/blob/main/hinted/ttf/NotoSerif/NotoSerif-Regular.ttf>. |
| [noto-serif-bold.ttf](assets/fonts/noto-serif-bold.ttf) | Static Noto Serif Bold, for Latin headings/emphasis in PDFs and print styles. | Same **2015-2021 Google LLC** binary copyright. Unmodified upstream file: <https://github.com/notofonts/noto-fonts/blob/main/hinted/ttf/NotoSerif/NotoSerif-Bold.ttf>. |

The static fonts' upstream repository license also carries **Copyright 2018 The Noto Project Authors (github.com/googlei18n/noto-fonts)**. That full upstream notice and OFL text are preserved in [assets/fonts/OFL-static.txt](assets/fonts/OFL-static.txt); the additional exact 2019 and 2015-2021 binary notices are recorded in [assets/fonts/FONT-NOTICES.md](assets/fonts/FONT-NOTICES.md). Retain the applicable notices with font redistribution. Source links identify the downloaded upstream distributions; this project has not changed the font glyphs or claimed authorship.

Fonts were downloaded on 29 October 2026. The OFL permits embedding and redistribution subject to its terms. It does **not** require a document's teaching text to be OFL-licensed. If you modify a font, follow the OFL's conditions, including any applicable reserved-name requirements. Canonical OFL information: <https://openfontlicense.org/open-font-license-official-text/>.

Screen CSS also names locally available fallback fonts such as Georgia, Times New Roman and Nirmala UI. Those font binaries are supplied by the visitor's operating system, if present; they are not included in this repository or website distribution. PDF authoring and print styles explicitly use the redistributed OFL fonts rather than embedding proprietary device fonts.

## 6. Software and dependencies

Project-authored application code, styles, build/check scripts, tests and developer documentation are licensed under the full **MIT License** in [LICENSE.md](LICENSE.md), copyright © 2026 Sameer Regmi and Dharma contributors. Keep that copyright and permission notice with copies or substantial portions of the software. This permission includes commercial use of the software itself; it does not replace the rights in texts, pictures, fonts or recordings used with it.

[THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md](THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md) and [licenses/dependencies/manifest.json](licenses/dependencies/manifest.json) record the exact locked software inventory: **43 packages, 16 installed packages, 27 uninstalled optional platform packages, and 26 preserved license/notice files** for this audit. They include package versions, upstream/package links, notice paths and SHA-256 hashes. The inventory is generated by `scripts/generate-third-party-notices.mjs` in the source repository; regenerate and review it after dependency changes.

The principal development tools are Happy DOM (MIT), Playwright (Apache-2.0), and Sharp (Apache-2.0). The installed Windows Sharp native package declares **Apache-2.0 AND LGPL-3.0-or-later**, and its retained README/version inventory identifies additional native libraries. Transitive dependencies have their own terms, including MIT, BSD-2-Clause, ISC and 0BSD. The detailed inventory, complete notice copies and package-specific native-library records govern; do not simplify all dependencies to MIT.

These npm packages are development, testing, PDF-authoring and image-encoding tools. The browser imports project-local modules and does not bundle these npm tools. `node_modules`, downloaded browsers, native binaries, Python packages and authoring runtimes are not committed or copied into the deployed site. Optional packages not installed on the audited platform are identified from lockfile metadata, not represented as having had their license texts inspected. If you later distribute tools or binaries, fulfill their complete applicable notice/source/relinking obligations; this source-only inventory does not replace that review. Tool use alone does not place the generated PDF or image under the tool's software license.

## 7. PDFs, printouts and audio

The **30 prebuilt PDFs** comprise 15 nonempty language combinations, each in text-only and illustrated form. They, and native printouts, are collections of separately licensed components. **No blanket MIT or CC0 license applies to an entire mixed-content edition.** Keep the relevant translator/source attribution, license URLs, modification statement, draft status, and any illustration notice with redistributed copies.

An edition containing English reproduces the ATI English translation under its CC BY-NC 4.0 terms. An edition without English identifies that translation as a consulted reference rather than claiming the English text is reproduced. Project contributions retain CC BY-NC 4.0 only where rights are held; Pāli remains public domain; embedded fonts retain OFL 1.1. Illustrated editions additionally retain the AI-art and caption notices. Do not remove notices merely because a particular language or picture is hidden in a different edition.

There is **no published audio recording in this POC**: all `audio` entries are `null`. A recording selected from a visitor's device is local playback preview only. It is not uploaded, redistributed or licensed by that action. Before publishing audio, record the speaker, recording owner, text/version read, permission to record and distribute, recording license, any music/sound licenses, and relevant passage timestamps. A license for a written translation is not automatically ownership of somebody else's voice or recording.

## 8. Future additions and reuse

For each new sutta, edition, image, recording or dependency, record the creator, exact source and edition, retrieval/revision date, permission/license, modifications and review status **before release**. Preserve upstream notices and add them to the website and relevant exports. A hyperlink or access to a download is not itself redistribution permission. Check each translator and edition individually, and retain earlier reviewed editions and their rights records when making revisions.

CC BY-NC 4.0 permits covered noncommercial sharing and adaptation with its conditions; commercial reuse requires another applicable permission from the relevant rights holder. Public-domain material remains available on its own terms. No trademark, logo, publicity or endorsement permission is granted through project licensing. Thanissaro Bhikkhu, Access to Insight, SuttaCentral, font authors and tool providers have not endorsed this project or its AI drafts and illustrations.

This register summarizes and identifies the sources; it does not alter their licenses. Consult the supplied full license texts and source-specific notices when redistributing. If a future source has incompatible or unclear permission, resolve it before including that material in a release.
