Originally created with the **built-in `image_gen` tool**, 29 October 2026; the Buddha depiction and raised-hand anatomy were revised with the same tool on **30 October 2026**. These are AI-generated narrative illustrations, not historical photographs or archaeological reconstructions. Each final image is 1536 × 1024 pixels (3:2), opaque PNG. The selected outputs were copied into this project without altering their pixels; originals remain at the tool's generated-image location.

| Asset | Scene | Source basis | Bytes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `01-seclusion.png` | Māluṅkyaputta alone in contemplation | MN 63 opening; `mn63-002` | 3,579,183 |
| `02-conversation.png` | Māluṅkyaputta speaking with the Buddha in the evening | `mn63-005` onward; source `mn63:3.1` explicitly says evening | 2,758,323 |
| `03-arrow-simile.png` | The injured man hesitating to accept help from the surgeon, with family nearby | The hypothetical poisoned-arrow simile; `mn63-012` onward | 2,798,447 |

The arrow image depicts a **simile**, not an event in the Buddha's life. The Buddha does not appear in that image. The text does not specify the precise anatomy of the wound, the family members' ages or genders, the appearance of the people, clothing details, architecture, tree species, or most lighting details. Those elements are interpretive artistic choices. In the seclusion image, the named grove is contextual; the text does not name the monk's particular tree or describe a seated pose. The Buddha's traditional artistic curls, restrained ushnisha, elongated earlobes and serene face are interpretive choices, not an assertion of a historical likeness. Caption these images as interpretive AI illustrations and retain the distinction between narrated setting and hypothetical simile.

Final images were visually checked for the requested scene, coherent watercolor style, people and pose, evening conversation, modest setting, absence of writing or watermarks, and absence of graphic injury. The conversation's first candidate was daylight; it was corrected by an image edit, and only the evening result is included here.

### Web delivery copies

The site uses `01-seclusion.webp`, `02-conversation.webp`, and `03-arrow-simile.webp`, with matching `-thumb.webp` previews. These were encoded from the PNG originals using Sharp (full size, quality 88; 360-pixel-wide thumbnails, quality 82). Full-size WebPs total about 1.21 MB; the thumbnails total about 88 KB. This changes delivery encoding only; PNG originals and scene composition are preserved. Rebuild with `npm run images`. The metadata sidecar records final dimensions and delivery URLs. No images are inserted into the reading DOM while the panel is hidden.

### 01 — Seclusion (generation)

Use case: illustration-story. Asset type: one landscape narrative illustration for a quiet Buddhist sutta reading website, aspect ratio 3:2. Primary request: portray the opening of Majjhima Nikaya 63, the Cula-Malunkyovada Sutta: the monk Malunkyaputta is ALONE in seclusion and contemplation at the grove monastery near Savatthi. Subject: one adult ancient Indian Buddhist monk with simple close-cropped hair, wearing a plain ochre-brown renunciant robe, sitting quietly beneath a leafy grove tree, thoughtful rather than theatrically distressed. No other person and no Buddha in this scene. Backdrop: a simple modest grove monastery setting in ancient northern India, natural earth path and restrained vegetation; any building distant and modest. Style: refined hand-painted watercolor and soft gouache on warm ivory handmade paper, visible delicate paper grain, natural earthy muted olive greens, umber, ochre and warm cream; elegant calm editorial storybook art with human proportions, no decorative border. Composition: landscape medium-wide view, the solitary seated monk clearly legible at small website size, spacious quiet setting. Lighting: soft natural filtered daylight, contemplative mood. Historical stance: respectful interpretive illustration, not a claim of archaeological reconstruction; no grand temple or distinctive invented monument. Constraints: exactly one person, no written text, no lettering, no logos, no watermark, no halos, no jewelry, no mystical effects, no weapons, no modern items, no ornate throne, no crowded composition. Opaque ivory background.

### 02 — Conversation (initial generation)

Use case: illustration-story. Asset type: one landscape narrative illustration for a quiet Buddhist sutta reading website, aspect ratio 3:2. Primary request: portray a scene from Majjhima Nikaya 63, the Cula-Malunkyovada Sutta: the monk Malunkyaputta has approached the Buddha, paid respect and is seated to one side speaking about his unanswered questions; the Buddha responds calmly. Subject: exactly two ancient northern Indian adult male Buddhist renunciants, seated on simple low mats in a quiet grove. Buddha is a serene mature human teacher with very close-cropped hair and a plain muted ochre robe, seated at ease in a natural teaching posture; no visible supernatural marks. Malunkyaputta, also very close-cropped hair and plain earth-brown ochre robe, sits respectfully slightly to one side, attentive but questioning, hands conveying a modest conversational gesture. This is a thoughtful conversation, not worship of a statue. Backdrop: leafy grove monastery near Savatthi, modest distant thatched shelter, earth path, nothing grand. Style: refined watercolor and soft gouache on warm ivory handmade paper, delicate visible paper grain, restrained earthy olive greens, umber, ochre and warm cream, elegant natural narrative storybook painting, human proportions, gently rendered faces. Composition: landscape medium-wide view showing both figures completely and their quiet exchange, readable as a small website image, simple clear silhouettes and breathing room. Lighting and mood: soft filtered natural daylight, calm intellectual seriousness and compassion. Historical stance: respectful interpretive illustration, not archaeological reconstruction. Constraints: no written text, no lettering, no logos, no watermark, no halo, no rays, no jewelry, no ornate throne, no statues, no temple spires, no modern items, no weapons, no extra listeners. Opaque paper background.

### 02 — Conversation (earlier evening-light correction)

Edit target: the provided watercolor scene of Malunkyaputta speaking with the Buddha. Change ONLY the time-of-day lighting to clearly early EVENING, just after sunset: quiet muted warm amber light near the horizon and gentle cooling olive-grey shadows under the grove, with soft dusk sky. The source passage explicitly says the monk went to speak with the Buddha in the evening. Preserve the exact two people, their identities, clothing, positions, seated conversational gestures, setting, hut, framing, gentle watercolor/gouache handmade ivory-paper medium and landscape aspect ratio. Keep faces readable and natural; do not make the picture too dark. No artificial lighting, no lanterns, no sun disk required, no halos or magical rays, no extra people, no text or watermark. Do not change scene content, only make it a faithful dusk/evening conversation.

### 03 — Arrow simile (generation)

Use case: illustration-story. Asset type: one landscape narrative illustration for a quiet Buddhist sutta reading website, aspect ratio 3:2. Primary request: illustrate the HYPOTHETICAL poisoned-arrow simile spoken by the Buddha in Majjhima Nikaya 63, not an event involving the Buddha himself. Subject: an ordinary ancient northern Indian clothed layman reclining partly upright on a simple woven mat in a village courtyard, with ONE small wooden arrow visibly lodged at his upper arm or shoulder through cloth. He makes a restrained palm-out questioning gesture and hesitates to permit treatment. A practical physician/surgeon kneels nearby ready to help, with a folded clean cloth and simple small medical implements beside him; two concerned family members stand or kneel nearby. Physician looks calm and capable, family concerned but not frantic. The injured man is clothed in a plain cream wrap and earth-colored cloth, visibly a layperson, NOT dressed as a monk, and NOT resembling a Buddha statue. The tiny non-graphic wound is covered by cloth; no blood, no exposed tissue. Backdrop: modest village courtyard with earthen surface and a simple thatched dwelling, ancient northern Indian setting; no battle scene and no bowman. Style: refined hand-painted watercolor and soft gouache on warm ivory handmade paper, delicate visible grain, muted earthy olive greens, umber, ochre and cream, elegant natural narrative storybook art, realistic human proportions, clear readable silhouettes. Composition: landscape medium-wide framing showing the interaction and hesitation, gentle natural daylight, compassion rather than violence, legible at small website size. Constraints: no Buddha, no monks, no halos, no jewelry display, no modern equipment, no syringes, no modern surgery, no graphic injury, no blood, no gore, no combat, no written text, no lettering, no labels, no logos, no watermark. Respectful interpretive art; the specific appearance, clothing, courtyard and light are artistic inferences, not historical reconstruction. Opaque paper background.

## Web use

The unmodified PNG masters are included for review and future derivatives. Load them only when pictures are enabled, use intrinsic width/height to reserve layout space, and lazy-load images outside the visible panel. Any future compressed delivery versions should retain these masters and all scene/source captions.

## Revisions on 30 October 2026

The conversation teacher was revised to a recognizable traditional Buddhist artistic depiction. The arrow-scene patient's raised hand was rotated to show its back, with visible knuckles and fingernails, a coherent wrist and thumb placement. These are interpretive image edits, not new historical evidence. Both selected outputs were visually reviewed before replacing their PNG masters; delivery images and illustrated PDFs were rebuilt from those masters.

### 02 — Buddha depiction (final edit)

Use case: precise-object-edit. Edit target: the supplied Dharma MN63 evening conversation watercolor. Correct ONLY the Buddha's head and face, the seated teacher on the RIGHT. Give him a respectful, immediately recognizable traditional Theravada Buddhist artistic appearance: calm compassionate oval face, gently lowered eyes, serene subtle expression, balanced features, elongated unadorned earlobes, small closely arranged dark curls and a restrained rounded ushnisha. He should look like the Buddha in classical Buddhist illustration, not an ordinary shaved-headed monk. Keep the monk on the LEFT entirely unchanged. Preserve exactly two people, their seated positions, all existing hand gestures and anatomically correct fingers, robes, body proportions, grove, hut, early-evening amber sky, watercolor and gouache texture, earthy olive/ochre palette, composition and 1536x1024 landscape size. No halo, supernatural rays, jewelry, added people, letters, text, watermark, or ornate throne. This is an interpretive devotional depiction, not a claim of historical likeness.

### 03 — Raised hand (final edit)

Precise anatomy correction to this image only. Change the injured man's raised hand/wrist gesture near the center so its anatomy is unambiguous and correct. Rotate the raised hand naturally so we see the BACK (dorsal side) of the hand in a three-quarter view, and the palm faces the doctor on the right. Show subtle fingernails/knuckles rather than the front-facing palm creases visible now. Four naturally proportioned fingers, longest middle finger, shorter little finger, and one opposable thumb correctly attached to the radial/index-finger side. The thumb must belong to this arm and wrist, not to a mirrored opposite hand. Preserve a relaxed stop/wait gesture, with coherent wrist rotation and bone structure. Preserve ALL other people, faces, hands, arrow, robes, courtyard, medical tools, original framing, warm watercolor style, and 1536x1024 size.
